Most people that buy netbooks tend to buy them for productivity’s sake. They are wonderful for searching the web or doing a bit of writing, but they do have significant drawbacks. If you have had your netbook for a more than a few weeks, you may likely have spent time wondering what else the small computer can do. Among many other questions – are Netbooks good for games? The truth of the matter is that they simply cannot handle most modern games, but it is possible to play some older games without much difficulty.
Why Netbooks are Not Great Gaming Machines
Netbooks are simple machines, meant mostly to browse the web and to perform basic computing tasks. They are not, however, designed for the immense burdens that modern computer games can place on a system. First and foremost, the netbooks simply lack the raw computing power; with slower processors, these machines simply cannot keep up. Coupled with the fact that most use fairly low-level integrated graphics cards, the machines simply cannot meet modern gaming standards. And, of course, the simple fact that most machines lack optical drives means that it is incredibly difficult to install any game bought in a store.
Older Games
Netbooks simply do not have the power to run the newer games on the market, but they are adequate for some older games. Games with simple, two-dimensional graphics often run quite well, though even some games that are nearly a decade old do have some problems on some machines. As a rule, though, the lower the requirements, the better the game should run on the machine. As such, those that happen to be able to download electronic copies of Windows 95/Windows XP era games can often find something to play.
Accessories to Help with Gaming
While netbooks are not necessarily great for any kind of gaming, a few basic accessories can make playing older games and flash-based games a bit easier. Perhaps the most important item is a simple optical mouse. Available for less than twenty dollars, these items can give you far more control in a game than the computer’s touch pad can offer. Another good addition, especially for older games, is a USB number pad. This small pad can allow a gamer to make use of keyboard control styles with a bit less effort than is required with the smaller keyboard of a netbook.
If you want to play a modern computer game, your netbook is likely not quite up to the task. But if you want to play an older game, you may be able to find a way to make the netbook meet your needs. As a rule, many older games will run on the system and you can find ways to entertain yourself despite the lack of computing power that the machine holds. If you need something that is on the cutting edge of technology, though, you may want to look for a computer with a bit more power than a netbook can offer.
